It’s St. Valentine’s Day, and love is in the air—or, at least, in the DMs of those lucky enough to have a Valentine. For university students, this is a season of grand romantic gestures, matching outfits, and of course, plenty of drama.
Hostel surprises, last-minute gift shopping, and the buzz of excitement fill the air. Whether it’s a grand public display of affection or a simple late-night stroll, the campus is alive with love stories unfolding in real time. If you want uncensored entertainment, just sit back and watch—from awkward love confessions to surprise rejections, university Valentine’s never disappoints.
But let’s be honest: university relationships are a special breed. Some are sweet and inspiring, some are confusing, and some are just downright funny. In the spirit of love and all its complexities, let’s take a fun dive into the different types of university relationships.
If you’re a student in a relationship, you might just see yourself in one of these categories or you must have experienced this in your undergrad days. And if you’re single, enjoy the show—it’s free entertainment!
1. The Power Couple:
These two look like they walked straight out of a romance novel. They do everything together from attending classes to eating lunch,, to reading in the library, and even occasional donning of matching outfits. They call each other “babe” so much that you sometimes forget they have real names.
They have couple study dates, cuddles in night classes, and even public displays of affection. Everyone either admires them or secretly waits for their breakup (which may or may not happen). But do they really end up together? That's another gist entirely.
2. The Situationship: This one is pure vibes and confusion. They do everything a couple does—text all day, go on dates, and even get jealous when the other talks to someone else—but if you ask them, “What are you guys?” the answer is always some variations of “We’re just friends” or “Let’s not rush things” or we’re still figuring things out. Lol
One person is usually way more invested than the other, but nobody wants to have the “what are we?” conversation. So, they continue this undefined romance until something (or someone) forces a decision, or one of them finds another person with a proper definition of what they want and the real drama unfolds. Lols.
3. The Hostel Romeo and Juliet: Hostel rules say “No visitors of the opposite sex,” but love says otherwise. These two risk it all just to spend time together. Whether it’s sneaking into the hostel, hiding and hanging behind doors, or pretending to be “just friends” when caught. They always live on the edge.
Midnight calls, short-lived hostel dates, night classes under covers, sex on the field and other bizarre places, and the constant fear of getting caught add to the thrill of their romance. But let’s be real—one day, someone is going to get caught, and when that happens, the news spreads like wildfire and their love story will either become legendary or come to an abrupt end.
4. The Long-Distance Struggle: Long-distance relationships are often romanticized as the ultimate test of love. One person is in another university, city, or even country, and their love is held together by late-night calls, constant texting, and the excitement of those rare, cherished visits during school breaks. In the beginning, it feels like a modern love story laced with promises, hope, and the belief that “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.”
However, as time stretches on, reality sets in. The thrill of virtual connections and phone sex begins to dim. Poor network signals turn heartfelt conversations into frustrating silence. Missed calls begin to feel like neglect. The unending buzz of campus life, new friendships, social gatherings, and it's ever-present temptations adds another layer of uncertainty, as insecurity creeps in, and what was once real become imaginary.
The real test comes when their partner stops picking up calls at night and wakes up with such excuses as “I was busy,” “I fell asleep,” “My phone died.” Slowly, doubt creeps in.
The most painful part is when your partner becomes mysterious. The sudden secrecy about their whereabouts. Something has changed. Love, once so certain, now feels like peekaboo.
5. The Assignment Boyfriend:
Hahahaha - The weirdest of them all.
The assignment boyfriend is a classic university relationship defined by convenience rather than romance. He suddenly becomes important when deadlines are looming. From solving tough assignments to ensuring group projects are done and submitted even by proxy. All he gets in return is sweet compliments, little attention, and perhaps free lunch. But once the assignments are submitted, the charm fades, and so does the connection. It’s less about love and more about exploitation — one offering brainpower, the other offering just enough affection to keep the help coming until the semester ends. A parasitic relationship that doesn't really feel like it.
I know you’ve been waiting to see me in one of these. Well, you’ll find out in future episodes. Lol.
This Valentine’s Day, whether you’re in a power couple, a situationship, or just living vicariously through your friends’ relationship drama, enjoy the ride. After all, university love stories—whether successful or disastrous—always make for great memories.
Now, let’s hear from you! Did I miss any? Which of these relationships have you experienced or witnessed the most? Drop a comment and let’s talk!
Happy Valentine’s Day
